Lynn’s perspective on business is deeply rooted in understanding value, quality, and data metrics. “It’s understanding the value as it relates to business, the quality, the data, the metrics and how to appropriate and apply that reasoning from conception to close-out,” she explains. In one of her classes, Lynn encountered the concept of SMART goals, which profoundly impacted her career trajectory. “We had to do a timeline of our short- and long-term goals. It was fascinating and mind-blowing,” she recalls. This exercise allowed her to clarify her aspirations and identify how to leverage her education for professional optimization.

Balancing Life and Education

As a part-time student aiming to graduate in September 2026, Lynn juggles her studies with the responsibilities of being a mother to three sons—Zion, Adon, and Caleb—while residing in Hollywood, California. Zion is currently attending Humboldt State University, adding another layer of complexity to her busy life.

Lynn began her program at Boise State in 2022 but faced a significant personal challenge when her partner of 16 years passed away. “I didn’t have a good mental run, then I picked it back up last year and have been steaming through it,” she shares. This resilience speaks volumes about her determination to succeed, even in the face of adversity.

The Value of Experience

At this stage in her career, Lynn recognizes the importance of her experience. “I am in my forties, so I am midway through my career,” she notes. Despite the influx of younger professionals with degrees, Lynn’s extensive experience positions her as a mentor, helping to train and guide less seasoned colleagues. She also acknowledges the challenges faced by older professionals who may not have pursued further education, emphasizing the value of continuous learning.

A Journey from Teaching to Project Management

Lynn’s career path has been anything but linear. Originally from Michigan, she started as an art teacher with the Girl Scouts of Metro Detroit before transitioning to real estate. “I wasn’t interested in selling homes, but I loved the management end of it,” she explains. This passion led her to a role in property management, where she quickly advanced through various sectors, including low-income housing and new home construction.

After relocating to California in 2010, Lynn earned an associate degree in marketing and eventually found her niche in commercial real estate. “From that, I was a project and facilities manager. I worked in design and construction, which was where I got my love for project management,” she reflects.

The Flexibility of Online Learning

The online format of Boise State’s program has been a significant advantage for Lynn. “It is pretty manageable,” she states, appreciating the flexibility it offers. As a full-time student, she thrives under tight deadlines, although she acknowledges the challenges posed by her ADHD. “I focus on the materials, outline, and set myself up to execute a little bit better,” she shares, demonstrating her proactive approach to overcoming obstacles.

Among her favorite courses are Business Law and Business Management, where she has explored leadership and goal-setting. “In Business Management, we looked at what leadership looks like, leading by example,” she explains. Her enthusiasm extends to an elective course in Wine Tasting and Brewing, which resonated with her personal interests and broadened her educational experience.

Looking Ahead

As Lynn approaches graduation, she envisions walking at the commencement ceremony in Boise. “I would love to do it,” she says, expressing excitement about this milestone. Her family and friends are equally supportive, recognizing the significance of her achievement.

Once she completes her degree, Lynn plans to explore opportunities as an independent contractor, utilizing her strengths in optimizing processes and training teams. She also aspires to share her experiences through presentations, including TED talks, aimed at empowering women in male-dominated industries like design and construction.

Lynn’s journey underscores the belief that age, financial status, and life circumstances should not deter anyone from pursuing education. “Every step of the way, Boise State has been a great resource for me to reach my goal,” she affirms.
