Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy expands further with over 30 partners in 2024

In 2023, Airbnb saw a significant increase in the diversity of travel destinations, with guests exploring more than 100,000 cities and towns across over 200 countries and regions. This trend not only reflects a growing interest in off-the-beaten-path locations but also presents economic opportunities for individuals looking to supplement their income through home sharing. In the United States alone, hosts earned over $24 billion in supplemental income in 2023, highlighting the financial benefits of participating in the sharing economy.

To further support communities around the world in benefiting from tourism, Airbnb launched the Entrepreneurship Academy in 2017. This initiative aims to introduce individuals from diverse and historically underrepresented backgrounds to the concept of hosting on the platform. By partnering with local organizations, the Academy offers tailored education programs to help participants learn how to become entrepreneurs by leveraging their spare rooms or properties on Airbnb.

Since its inception, the Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy has successfully assisted more than 4,500 individuals from diverse and underrepresented communities in 12 countries in learning the ins and outs of hosting on Airbnb. The program has not only provided economic opportunities but has also empowered participants to take control of their financial futures and build sustainable businesses.

Looking ahead to 2024, Airbnb plans to expand the Entrepreneurship Academy by collaborating with over 30 organizations worldwide. Partnerships with entities such as the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Black BRAND, UNESCO, and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia demonstrate a shared commitment to empowering diverse communities through the tourism economy. By providing funding and support to these organizations, Airbnb aims to help them enhance their existing entrepreneurship programs and host Academies that unlock the economic potential of hosting for the communities they serve.

The Academy experience includes insights from successful Superhosts, who share valuable tips and information on how to kickstart and thrive in the world of Airbnb hosting. Participants also gain knowledge about the platform’s tools and resources that can help them grow their businesses, generate wealth, and promote inclusive tourism practices.

Testimonials from Academy attendees like Zamani from South Africa, Wira from Indonesia, Rafa from Mexico, and Melody from the US highlight the transformative impact of the program on their lives and communities. These individuals have not only found financial stability and success through hosting on Airbnb but have also deepened their connections with their heritage, culture, and local communities.

By expanding the reach of the Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy, Airbnb aims to continue supporting communities worldwide in harnessing the economic benefits of tourism. Through education, empowerment, and collaboration, the program seeks to create a more inclusive and sustainable tourism industry that benefits both hosts and guests alike.
