Earned ,000 a Year as a Part-Time Pilates Instructor, Benefiting Body and Mind

Eleven years ago, I made a life-changing decision to become a Pilates instructor. Little did I know that this decision would not only lead me to a fulfilling career but also help me build a successful side hustle. Over the years, I have earned over $20,000 annually from teaching classes, which ultimately allowed me to transition into a new career path. Teaching Pilates has not only been financially rewarding but has also been a source of joy and fulfillment for me.

As someone who was a competitive runner for most of my adult life, I struggled to find a balance between intense cardio workouts and proper stretching and strength training. It wasn’t until I discovered Pilates that I found the perfect solution. The low-impact, full-body workout instantly captured my interest when I took my first Pilates mat class at my local YMCA in 2005. The exercises were not only fun and challenging but also provided a refreshing change from my usual cardio routine.

After falling in love with Pilates, I decided to deepen my practice by enrolling in a teacher-training program offered by my studio. Initially, my intention was solely to enhance my own Pilates practice. However, as I started leading group classes and private sessions during my apprenticeship, I realized that I had a passion for teaching and could potentially make a living out of it. Fast forward to today, and I have been teaching Pilates for over a decade with no plans of stopping.

Working as a Pilates instructor turned out to be a great side hustle for me, especially when I was feeling burned out from my previous job as a freelance publicist. Teaching classes not only provided me with a decent income but also allowed me to explore new career opportunities. The flat rate for classes and private lessons, along with bonuses for high attendance, incentivized me to build my client base and make each session enjoyable with creative playlists and props. Additionally, subbing for other teachers helped me supplement my income and expand my teaching experience.

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a Pilates instructor is building a fitness community and strengthening my body. Over the years, I have developed close relationships with my clients and fellow instructors, creating a supportive network that extends beyond the studio. Even when faced with challenges like the closure of the gym I worked at in 2017 or the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, my dedication to Pilates allowed me to adapt by launching virtual classes and maintaining connections with my clients.

While I may not teach as frequently as before, Pilates continues to be a valuable side hustle for me. Through virtual classes, one-off workshops, and events, I am able to earn extra income and stay connected with my favorite students. The practice of Pilates has not only strengthened my body but has also taught me to move intentionally and connect with my physical self. As a runner, I still incorporate Pilates moves into my pre- and post-run routine, reaping the benefits of a balanced fitness regimen.

In conclusion, becoming a Pilates instructor has been a transformative journey for me. From discovering a new passion to building a successful side hustle, teaching Pilates has enriched my life in ways I never imagined. The connections I have made, the joy of teaching, and the physical benefits of the practice have all contributed to my continued dedication to Pilates. As I look towards the future, I am grateful for the opportunities that this practice has brought into my life and excited to see where this journey will take me next.
