As the new academic year approaches, students at Illinois State University are gearing up for the return of the hustle and bustle on campus. To help students navigate their way through the semester, Career Services is excited to host its annual You Can Work at ISU Student Hiring Event on August 15. This event, held in the Bone Student Center, provides students with the opportunity to identify and apply for various student positions available on campus. University departments with open positions will be present at the event, conducting on-the-spot interviews with students.
Natalie R. Alexander, Career Services associate director, emphasizes the benefits of the student hiring event, stating, “Students can identify open positions that not only fuel their wallet, but can also help them gain valuable learning experiences. When working for a university department, faculty and staff become their employers who are here to support student success.” Students who secure on-campus employment not only receive a paycheck but also gain mentors, build professional connections, and enhance the skills necessary for their academic and professional endeavors.
The skills acquired through part-time employment can be tailored to a student’s area of study or encompass life skills essential for their future careers. Alexander highlights the importance of transferable skills, such as communication, teamwork, and leadership, which are crucial for students as they navigate their career paths. The event also serves as a platform for students to explore their interests and gain insights into potential career opportunities that align with their aspirations.
Students interested in part-time employment are advised to bring their Redbird identification card and any necessary information required for job applications, such as a list of previous employers and their contact details, as well as their class schedule. This preparation ensures a smooth and efficient application process during the event.
In addition to university departments, community employers from Bloomington-Normal and McLean County will have the opportunity to participate in the Part-time Job Fair hosted by Career Services on September 4. Local employers interested in engaging with Illinois State University students must register in advance to attend the fair.
With a student population of nearly 21,000, Illinois State University is committed to providing valuable opportunities for students to explore part-time employment options through events like the You Can Work at ISU Student Hiring Event. As students prepare to embark on a new academic year, Career Services remains dedicated to supporting their professional growth and development through various job and career fairs scheduled for the fall semester.
