In Marion County, Florida, teachers at Ocali Charter High School are taking a unique approach to education by introducing their students to the world of entrepreneurship. With a focus on practical skills and real-world experience, the school requires all 75 students to enroll in an entrepreneurship class as part of their curriculum.
The school recently held an inaugural ceremony to celebrate its grand opening, highlighting the importance of teaching young minds about business and innovation. Principal Elizabeth Brown explained that students are mandated to join the Online Business Incubator program, which is operated through a platform called Nifty. This three-year program immerses students in the world of business and entrepreneurship, guiding them through the process of setting up an actual online business.
Through the Online Business Incubator, students have the opportunity to design and develop their own business from start to finish. Principal Brown emphasized the hands-on nature of the program, stating, “They work through an online platform and they literally design every piece of the business. By the time they finish the program, that business is legitimate and they can turn a profit off of their online business.”
One of the key aspects of the program is that students have the freedom to choose any type of business they want to pursue. This flexibility allows them to explore their interests and passions while learning valuable entrepreneurial skills. Sophomore Jacob Haynes expressed his enthusiasm for the program, stating, “They’re going to teach you how to think like an entrepreneur and eventually by the end of the year, the goal is to get the students to create their own business and be successful with it.”
To enhance the students’ experience, the school has partnered with Rob Harrison Realty, providing additional resources and support to help students succeed in their entrepreneurial endeavors. Freshman Hunter Shrader shared his appreciation for the program, stating, “I like it because we’re learning how to become successful in life and think like an entrepreneur.”
Looking ahead, Principal Brown revealed plans to introduce more career and technical programs in the coming year, catering to students who may not be interested in business. These additional programs will help students discover their passions and strengths, preparing them for success beyond high school. Brown emphasized the school’s commitment to supporting students every step of the way, ensuring they are well-equipped for their future endeavors.
In a world where entrepreneurship and innovation are highly valued, Ocali Charter High School is setting a new standard for education by empowering students to think creatively, take risks, and pursue their dreams. By instilling a spirit of entrepreneurship in young minds, the school is shaping the next generation of leaders and innovators.
