Poole College Improves Entrepreneurship Minor for NC State Students

In today’s rapidly changing and competitive job market, students from various disciplines are recognizing the importance of developing entrepreneurial skills to stand out and succeed in their careers. At North Carolina State University (NC State), students have the opportunity to enhance their entrepreneurial acumen through the newly redesigned business entrepreneurship minor offered by Poole College. This minor is designed to equip non-business students with the essential skills needed to thrive in a dynamic work environment that values creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, and innovation.

Jeff Pollack, a professor at Poole College and research director for NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship, emphasizes the significance of entrepreneurial thinking in today’s professional landscape. He highlights that the minor not only prepares students to potentially start their own ventures but also equips them to contribute effectively to existing startups, corporate organizations, and government agencies. The program aims to instill a mindset of innovation and opportunity creation, essential qualities sought after by employers in diverse industries.

The entrepreneurship minor at NC State has been revamped to incorporate core principles and hands-on experiences tailored to the needs of non-business students. The curriculum is open to all undergraduate students at the university, regardless of their major. By enrolling in this minor, students from varied disciplines can develop entrepreneurial thinking and skills that are highly valued by employers. The program’s redesign includes new courses taught by Pollack, focusing on concept development, problem-solving, financial basics, and hands-on experiences through a capstone project related to each student’s major.

In addition to classroom learning, students in the entrepreneurship minor have access to practical opportunities that enhance their skills and real-world experience. These include a practicum class, a mentorship program, and participation in the NC State Entrepreneurship Clinic, where students collaborate with real clients to grow a startup. Pollack emphasizes the importance of experiential learning outside the academic setting, as it prepares students to make meaningful contributions from day one in their future roles.

The updated minor underscores collaboration between NC State’s colleges and NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship, promoting a multidisciplinary approach to entrepreneurship education. Through reciprocity agreements with various departments and colleges, students can apply entrepreneurial thinking to projects within their majors or explore new disciplines of interest. Jennifer Capps, assistant vice provost of NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship, emphasizes that the skills gained through the entrepreneurship minor can enhance students’ job prospects and open up new career pathways they may not have considered before.

Overall, the entrepreneurship minor at NC State aims to cultivate a diverse and skilled workforce of graduates who are well-equipped to identify opportunities, communicate effectively, and drive innovation in various fields. By fostering an entrepreneurial mindset and providing real-world experiences, the program empowers students to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond. As students graduate with a strong foundation in entrepreneurship, they are poised to excel in a rapidly evolving and competitive job market, bringing fresh ideas and solutions to the forefront of innovation.
