Single Mothers Receiving Assured Income: ‘Having that Additional Income is a Comforting Thought’

Front and Center is a powerful series of op-eds published by Ms. magazine in collaboration with the Magnolia Mother’s Trust, shedding light on the experiences of Black women who are disproportionately impacted by national policies. The series aims to amplify the voices of Black women living in federally subsidized housing, particularly those participating in the Magnolia Mother’s Trust program, which provides $1,000 per month for 12 months to 100 families headed by Black women.

One of the featured mothers in the series is Porscha, a 36-year-old single mother living in Jackson, Mississippi. Porscha works as a personal care assistant with a senior care company, where she finds fulfillment in providing companionship and support to older individuals. Despite her dedication to her job, Porscha dreams of becoming a business owner, running a shelter to assist unhoused individuals or operating a daycare center. Her passion for helping others shines through in her work and aspirations.

Financial stability is crucial for Porscha to achieve her goals, but she faces challenges due to the high cost of living. With a monthly income of $1,700, Porscha struggles to make ends meet, especially with rising expenses such as rent, utilities, and groceries. She receives $92 a month in SNAP benefits, which is insufficient to cover her food expenses. Porscha’s resilience and resourcefulness are evident as she navigates financial hardships, seeking additional work opportunities to supplement her income.

The Magnolia Mother’s Trust has been a lifeline for Porscha, providing her with much-needed financial support and alleviating some of the stress associated with financial insecurity. The $1,000 monthly stipend has allowed Porscha to breathe easier, knowing that she can better care for her daughter and address unexpected expenses. The program has inspired Porscha to set new goals, including improving her credit, upgrading her car, and eventually becoming a homeowner.

Through the Front and Center series, Porscha’s story highlights the impact of guaranteed income programs on the lives of Black women and their families. The program not only provides financial assistance but also empowers recipients to pursue their dreams and create a better future for themselves and their loved ones. Porscha’s resilience, determination, and compassion embody the strength and resilience of Black women facing economic challenges.
