Have you ever planned something out, only to realize that you needed to make a last-minute change to reach more people? That’s exactly what happened to me recently when I hosted a webinar.
I had planned a great session on Zoom, but as the date got closer, I noticed that the sign-ups weren’t as high as I hoped. Instead of sticking to my original plan, I decided to pivot and go live on Facebook instead, where I knew I could reach a wider audience—and it turned out to be the best decision!
Here’s what I learned from that experience, and how these lessons can apply to your freelance journey, especially when things don’t go exactly as expected.
Even though I had prepared for a Zoom webinar, I quickly realized that shifting to Facebook Live would allow me to connect with more people. Facebook’s wider reach meant that I could engage with my audience where they were already hanging out, without asking them to sign up for something new.
It was a reminder that sometimes, even with the best-laid plans, flexibility is key. Going where your audience (or clients) feel most comfortable can make all the difference.
Practical Tip: In your freelancing work, always be open to adapting based on what your clients or audience need. Sometimes this means using a different tool or adjusting your approach. The goal is to meet them where they are and make the experience as easy as possible for them.
Try This: Next time you’re working on a project or offering a service, think about how you can make it easier for your clients. Whether it’s simplifying how they communicate with you or providing more accessible options, small shifts can lead to bigger opportunities.
The switch to Facebook Live wasn’t just about flexibility—it was about expanding my reach. Going live on a platform that didn’t require sign-ups meant more people could just jump in, and I was able to connect with a wider audience than I initially expected. This reminded me that sometimes, reaching more people can be as simple as lowering the barriers to entry.
Practical Tip: As a freelancer, think about how you can expand your reach. Whether it’s connecting with more clients on social media, offering free resources, or even hosting live Q&A sessions, making yourself more visible can help grow your audience and client base.
Try This: Pick one platform where your audience or potential clients spend time, and commit to showing up consistently. It could be Instagram, LinkedIn, or Facebook—wherever your audience hangs out, be there. Even one small post or live video a week can start building more awareness and engagement.
When I first realized I needed to switch platforms, I’ll admit I worried about how it would go. But once I got started on Facebook Live, I quickly saw how much people appreciated the chance to join in and engage. The best part? It wasn’t about having everything be perfect—it was about showing up and being present.
Practical Tip: Sometimes we get so caught up in trying to make things perfect that we forget that showing up is what really matters. Whether you’re pitching to a new client, creating a project, or starting something new, don’t let perfection hold you back. The most important thing is to take action, adapt, and keep moving forward.
Try This: If you’ve been holding off on something because you’re waiting for it to be “just right,” challenge yourself to take one small step forward this week. Whether it’s sending that pitch, launching a new service, or even posting your first live video, start now and improve as you go!
I’ve shared my story of switching things up to reach more people, and now I want to hear about your wins! Did you take a step outside your comfort zone? Land a new client or wrap up a project you’re proud of? No matter how big or small, every win deserves to be celebrated.
And remember, even if this week didn’t go as planned, that’s part of the journey. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, grow, and get better at what you do.
Reflection Tip: Take a few minutes today to reflect on one thing that went well this week. It doesn’t have to be huge—maybe you sent an important email, reached out to a new client, or finally finished that project. Whatever it is, acknowledge your progress and give yourself credit!
To help you keep the momentum going, here are a few practical tips for the week ahead:
Stay Visible: Whether it’s posting on social media or checking in with your clients, staying visible and active helps you stay top-of-mind for opportunities.
Reach Out for Feedback: If you’re working on a project, ask your client for early feedback. It keeps them engaged and helps you adjust before the final stages.
Stay Consistent: Choose one thing to focus on this week and commit to being consistent with it. Whether it’s creating content, improving your workflow, or learning something new, consistency is key to long-term success.
Don’t Be Afraid to Pivot: Just like my switch from Zoom to FB Live, remember that you always have the power to pivot when needed. Flexibility is a freelancer’s best friend!
