Three Strategies to Wow Your Freelance Clients

Hey writers,

Today’s newsletter is out a bit later than normal because I was whisked away to a masquerade ball last night at RomantasyCon in LA. I spent all weekend hanging out with fellow readers, authors, and a cardboard cut-out of Edward Cullen wearing a Ripped Bodice tie-dye bucket hat. Absolutely immaculate vibes.

In the past two weeks, I’ve been on several calls with new clients who have received their first deliverables from me for their book projects. All of my recent clients expressed how over-the-moon excited they were to be working with me — and the feeling is mutual! I’m proud to say that I “wow” my clients with every deliverable these days. This is partly because I’ve been doing this freelance writing thing for a long time (experience helps!) but I also have specific strategies I use to make sure all of my clients are impressed by the work they receive from me.

Here are the 3 tips I have for you to up the “wow” factor of your work:

1. Underpromise and overdeliver: This is timeless advice, but it’s so important in the freelancing space. You shouldn’t be promising your clients the sun and the moon in your first meeting. Instead, discovery calls should be about sharing why you’re qualified for the job and why you’re passionate about their project. Don’t be too overzealous from the jump — the right clients will hire you and see your value if you present your work and yourself in a simple but compelling way. Then, once you’ve been hired, it’s time to knock it out of the park!

2. Understand your client’s goals for the project, and how you can uniquely help them: There’s a lot of nuance in this tip. As an expert freelancer, I’ve gotten really good at asking the right questions to tease out what my clients want from working with me, and how I can deliver exactly what they want — and what they need. You’d be surprised at how often those two things can be different.

3. Presentation of your work matters: Make sure your documents have proper headings, page numbers, and all of the other basics of a polished final deliverable. Re-read your work to rid it of any typos or small errors, and ensure that you take the extra time to turn in something that you’re proud of. The small details matter, so take the time to get them right! This attention to detail is what separates the “good” freelancers from the “great” freelancers who can charge luxury rates.

Impressing your clients requires a combination of empathy, skill, and being in the right niche for your specific talents. Is there anything else that you do to make your clients feel like they made the right choice in hiring you? Would love to hear in the comments!

It’s been just over a week since The Ash Trials came out! It’s been such a lovely whirlwind to read your nice emails, reviews, and social media posts about the book. Thank you for your support — it truly means the world to me! Special shout-out to book influencer Natilla who posted this super sweet video to her TikTok encouraging others to read the book! I love Natilla’s energy and book recs, so be sure to follow her on TikTok and Instagram! If you’re a book reviewer and/or influencer (or someone who likes writing book reviews in the romantasy space!) feel free to reply to this email if you’d like a free copy of The Ash Trials.
