UNCG’s Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization: Fostering Innovation and Connection
Updated Note: This story has been updated to include details about the April 15, 2025 Marketplace and a new club officer.
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is home to the Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization (CEO), a dynamic student-led initiative designed to empower aspiring entrepreneurs. By providing educational opportunities and fostering a creative environment, CEO encourages students to explore their entrepreneurial spirit and connect with like-minded peers.
Leadership and Vision
Under the leadership of President Jules Belfi, Vice President Meaghan Dohnert, and Marketplace Director Carrie Holcombe, CEO has become a hub of interaction and innovation. The trio has worked tirelessly to create an engaging atmosphere through various events and workshops that inspire students to think outside the box and pursue their business aspirations.
From Idea to Reality
Belfi’s vision for the CEO student marketplace emerged from a desire to help her peers expand their reach while merging business with design. This marketplace serves as a platform for students to showcase and sell their products and services to the campus community. Typically held every fall and spring semester on College Avenue, the marketplace has become a staple event for budding entrepreneurs.
The most recent marketplace, held on October 1, 2024, featured 73 vendors who collectively generated over $27,500 in sales, averaging $475.55 per vendor. Notably, 59% of vendors reported sales exceeding $200 each, highlighting the marketplace’s success and the entrepreneurial spirit thriving within the UNCG community.
Mark your calendars for the next marketplace on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Stone Lawn. This event promises an exciting lineup of musical performances alongside a diverse array of products, including apparel, jewelry, artisanal crafts, and more.
Got to Start Somewhere
Among the many success stories is Ayla Thompson, an entrepreneurship and marketing student who serves as the director of media for CEO. Thompson launched her business, Finds & Reminds, at the age of fourteen but truly found her footing during the first student marketplace last fall. Since then, she has participated in over ten markets outside of CEO, using her platform to upcycle and resell clothes, thereby contributing to the reduction of textile waste.
Thompson reflects, “The student marketplace gave me the push I needed to get started and keep going.”
Crafting Unique Narratives
Another inspiring entrepreneur is Lakshmi Bobbili, a computer science graduate student who specializes in handmade Indian fusion jewelry. Her passion for crafting began in childhood and has blossomed into a thriving business. Bobbili emphasizes that entrepreneurship is not just about profit; it’s about creating value and making a difference.
“Each piece reflects my love for craftsmanship and is created for those who appreciate unique, culturally inspired accessories,” she explains. Bobbili views the entrepreneurial journey as one of self-discovery and resilience, where every challenge presents an opportunity for growth.
Embracing Challenges
While entrepreneurship offers personal and professional growth, it also comes with its share of challenges. Bobbili acknowledges the uncertainties and risks involved in running a business, stating, “Despite these challenges, the journey is incredibly rewarding, as each obstacle provides an opportunity to grow, learn, and improve.”
The CEO marketplace not only raises awareness of student businesses but also fosters connections among student entrepreneurs. Briana Johnson, a new media design student and owner of Br33zytees, has been in business since 2016. She credits her involvement in organizations like CEO for boosting her confidence in discussing her brand and its mission.
“In entrepreneurship, I’m in control of my success or failure,” Johnson asserts. Through her experience at UNCG, she has honed her self-image and learned how to effectively present herself and her business.
