UW–Madison reveals new plan to enhance entrepreneurship

The University of Wisconsin–Madison is embarking on a journey to enhance its entrepreneurial ecosystem, guided by a comprehensive study commissioned by Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin. The study, titled ‘Empowering the Wisconsin Idea: The Future of Entrepreneurship at the University of Wisconsin–Madison,’ outlines a strategic plan to create a vibrant entrepreneurial environment that leverages the university’s strengths and commitment to fostering innovation across campus.

One of the key priorities identified by Chancellor Mnookin is to establish a signature on-campus entrepreneurship unit that will serve as a central hub for coordinating efforts and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, including partners, industry professionals, students, alumni, and faculty. This unit will play a crucial role in unifying existing programs and charting a new direction to empower the entrepreneurial community at UW–Madison to lead on a national and global scale.

The working group behind the report, co-chaired by Jon Eckhardt and Chris Kozina, brought together entrepreneurial and innovation leaders from both campus and industry to review current practices and make recommendations for enhancing entrepreneurship at the university. The committee’s diverse membership, which included individuals from industry, campus administration, and faculty, ensured a holistic approach to addressing the challenges and opportunities in fostering entrepreneurship at UW–Madison.

As part of the recommendations outlined in the report, the university aims to commit to excellence in entrepreneurship, establish campus leadership and structure to bolster entrepreneurial activities, create a culture that promotes and celebrates entrepreneurship, and expand access to capital for aspiring entrepreneurs. These recommendations are designed to build on the university’s existing strengths and create a supportive environment for innovation and growth.

Chancellor Mnookin’s recent appointment of Jon Eckhardt as a special advisor for the entrepreneurial initiative underscores the university’s commitment to advancing entrepreneurship on campus. Eckhardt’s role will involve aligning key stakeholders, exploring structures to support entrepreneurship, and implementing the recommendations outlined in the report. By adopting a founder-first approach, UW–Madison aims to put faculty, students, staff, and alumni at the center of entrepreneurship, thereby fostering the formation of more companies and extending the university’s impact beyond Madison.

Looking ahead, the university has outlined a series of next steps to implement the report’s recommendations, including focusing on the structure and tactics needed to support entrepreneurship, recruiting top talent to lead entrepreneurial efforts, and gathering data to refine the approach. Collaboration with key partners such as the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, the Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association, and University Research Park will be essential in implementing the report’s findings and recommendations.

UW–Madison’s long history of entrepreneurial excellence, coupled with its existing programs and services focused on entrepreneurship education, positions the university well to build on its strengths and further support campus entrepreneurs. With a renewed focus on entrepreneurship, UW–Madison is poised to create a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem that fosters innovation, growth, and economic impact across the state and beyond.
