Veterans benefit from entrepreneurship program to start and expand businesses

U.S. Marine Corps veteran Derrick Aguilar is a shining example of how military training and experience can translate into successful civilian careers. After completing the program in 2020, Aguilar has been serving the Southwest Florida community through his welding and fabrication business, American Veteran Welding. During his time as a corporal in Cherry Point, North Carolina, Aguilar honed his skills as a welder, repairing and fabricating military equipment. This experience laid the foundation for his transition into the civilian sector, where he now provides structural steel work services to commercial and residential projects.

Aguilar credits much of his success to the support he received from FGCU’s veterans program and staff. With the help of seed funding provided by the program, Aguilar was able to purchase a commercial service truck, welding machines, equipment, and tools necessary to kickstart his welding business. This initial investment marked a significant turning point for American Veteran Welding, propelling the business towards growth and success. In addition to financial assistance, Aguilar also benefited from valuable business connections and mentorship opportunities offered through the program, helping him develop essential skills needed to thrive in the competitive business world.

Looking ahead, program director Schaffer is optimistic about the future of the program. With plans to surpass $1 million in equity-free seed funding distributed, the program is set to make a historic impact in the coming year. Partnering with Veterans Florida, who is celebrating its 10th anniversary, the program has expanded to offer three cohort-based programs and more workshops to reach a larger group of local veterans. This expansion reflects the program’s commitment to supporting veterans in their entrepreneurial endeavors and fostering growth in the Southwest Florida community.

Schaffer emphasizes that veterans in the program are not just launching businesses; they are creating jobs, providing services, and driving economic growth in the region. Each success story serves as a testament to the transformative power of the program, motivating the team to continue their efforts in helping more local veterans turn their dreams into reality. The achievements celebrated thus far fuel their passion to make a lasting impact, knowing that the businesses launched by veterans have far-reaching effects on the community.

In conclusion, Derrick Aguilar’s journey from Marine Corps veteran to successful business owner exemplifies the potential and resilience of veterans in the civilian workforce. Through the support of programs like FGCU’s veterans program, veterans like Aguilar are able to leverage their skills and experiences to build thriving businesses and contribute to the growth and prosperity of their communities. As the program continues to expand and evolve, it will undoubtedly continue to empower more veterans to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams and make a positive impact in Southwest Florida and beyond.
